I’ll get it on video if she ever wants to go near it again. She was sniffing it, which of course set it off, and then she started lashing her tail, which also made it move, and then she was trying to figure out something about the amp after she realized the connection between her movements and the noises. It’s rare that she encounters something she totally can’t seem to explain to herself, and that seemed to be one of those things.
It was sold as a theremin but it’s apparently some predecessor to a “real” theremin because it’s only got one antenna. (Which means I’m going to have to start looking for volume pedals, because right now I have to turn the volume knob on the amp in order to play it.)
If you’ve heard the Beach Boys song “Good Vibrations” you’ve heard a theremin. It’s that cool “oooOOOooo” break in the middle of the song. A lot of horror movies also use theremins for atmosphere.
There was an interesting theremin-based group in the 60s called Lothar and the Hand People. Truly underrated pop. (The band name is derived from the instrument. The full name of the contraption is actually a lothar-theramin.)
what you have is sometimes called a “simple theremin,” though the name varies because people build different versions of them and call them what they want. “simple theremins” don’t have volume control.
cats and theremins or thats and carermins? ‘In my language’ opened my eyes. Thanks.
Woman, that is bloody unfair.
Well it’s not my fault she went up and sniffed it while it was turned on.
Video?! I want to see! Cats! Theremins! You have a theremin?

Bullet tries desperately to resist awful pun about cats and fails miserably.
So, she was feline purrfectly surprised then? :P.
Thanks. I learned what a theremin is today.
‘Swat I mean by unfair. You can’t go teasing folks with that stuff if you didn’t get it on video. Not to mention that you actually *have* a theremin.
Bullet:
Booooooooooooo.
(And hissssssssss.) :P

P.S. The title of the post should have been “Feline Groovy”
Bet she practically shat herself :P
here’s me expecting theremins to be something like prednisones. glad it’s not.
My Dad says “I’ve got to get a theramin!”
That’s a quotable statement *writes down*

a theremin that uses a saw instead of an antenna:
an antenna that uses a balloon to control pitch:
pencil marks on paper used to control pitch:
Thats halarious!
